Key USPTO Trademark Filing 2025 Deadlines: Transitioning from TEAS to the Trademark Center

The Final Day for TEAS Draft Applications

Every year, the ID Manual, which serves as the official guide for defining goods and services in trademark filings, is updated on January 1. The most recent update, effective in 2025, carried additional implications for users of the Trademark Electronic Application System (TEAS). All in-progress TEAS applications had to be submitted by 11:59 p.m. ET on December 31, 2024, as any saved OBJ files or incomplete electronic signature requests became invalid following the update. For those who transitioned to the new Trademark Center—a modernized platform designed to streamline the trademark application process and provide more intuitive tools for users—drafts created before the deadline remained accessible. However, applicants who did not submit their applications by December 31 were required to re-enter the details of their goods and services and resend any outstanding signature requests to move forward.

Last Day for TEAS Applications and Current Fee Schedule

January 17, 2025, marks the final opportunity to file an initial trademark application using the TEAS platform. For TEAS users, any application started on or after January 1, 2025, must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. ET on January 17. After this deadline, saved OBJ files and incomplete electronic signature requests will no longer transfer to the new Trademark Center, and the TEAS initial application forms will be permanently retired. For those already using the Trademark Center, the same January 17 deadline applies. All draft applications must be submitted, and electronic signature requests must be completed by 11:59 p.m. ET; otherwise, any unfinished drafts will be removed from the system. Additionally, January 17 is the last day to file under the current fee schedule, as the new, higher trademark fees will take effect starting January 18, 2025.

January 18, 2025: Full Transition to Trademark Center

Starting January 18, 2025, the Trademark Center will become the sole platform for filing trademark applications, fully replacing the TEAS system. As part of this transition, the 2025 trademark fee schedule will also go into effect. Applicants are encouraged to review the updated fees to understand how these changes may impact their filings and to prepare accordingly for the new cost structure.

What These Changes Mean for You

If you’re a business owner or attorney preparing trademark applications, it’s essential to take a few key steps to ensure a smooth transition during this period of change. First, if you have any drafts in TEAS, don’t delay—submit them before the January 17 deadline to save yourself time, effort, and potentially higher fees. Next, take the time to familiarize yourself with the new Trademark Center. Although it is designed to be user-friendly, becoming comfortable with the platform ahead of time can help you avoid unnecessary complications as the deadline approaches. Finally, review the upcoming fee changes carefully. Filing your applications before January 18 could save you money, making now the ideal time to act and take advantage of the current fee schedule.
